Restoration and Conservation

We have a sound practical knowledge and expertise in restoring the stained glass & leaded light windows and doors in Churches, Historical Buildings and Private Houses of all sizes.

We are fully conversant with legislation regarding the restoration of listed buildings and are pleased to liaise with Heritage and Conservation bodies.

Our craftsmen are experienced in all aspects of stained glass & leaded light restoration and conservation and much of our work involves the restoration/repair of damaged stained glass windows and doors, however caused.

Wherever possible, the repair will be carried out on site but in the case of more extensive restoration work being necessary, the damaged panel will be removed and the window temporarily glazed for security and the panel brought back to our Workshop for restoration.

Where extensive damage has occurred we are able to recreate the stained glass by painting new sections to replace any missing glass or by painstakingly bonding the surviving glass fragments together, and then re-leading the restored areas to make them water-tight and to stabilise.

However, if the damage is less extensive, it is considered preferable nowadays for a single crack line to be “strapped”, rather than to be replaced with a sympathetically-chosen new piece of glass, to ensure the work maintains its authenticity.
